Mandate of Modernisation Division
Modernization Division is responsible for actionable developmentof products/ technologies for police application and ensures effectiveimplementation/ introduction of the modern technology/ gadgetry in the PoliceForces. Identification of emerging technologies or initiation of work on newtechnologies should be encouraged so that the Police Forces can be equippedwith the best and are capable to resist any threat whether in the jungle,streets or in the lab. The main areas can be outlined as:-
- Scientific research, development, trial, innovations of existing products and technologies for possible use by Police Forces.
- Aid and advice Police Forces in their modernization efforts by making the latest research, development, innovations, technology, products/ technologies available to Police Forces.
TheDivision undertakes liaison with the national laboratories, other scientific organizationsand institutions and public and private sector undertakings in the abovefields, coordination of modernization programmed and stimulating indigenousproduction of Police equipment and system.
The Modernization Division is expected to keep abreast with modernization in theapplication of science and technology to police work in India and othercountries, and study new procedures and methodologies with a view to promotingthe introduction of suitable equipment and techniques in police work in Indiato improve its operational efficiency.
Besidesadvising the Government of India, the Modernization Division, if required bythe State Governments, also advises them on matters falling within the field ofits operations.
The Modernization Division (erstwhile Development Division) was set up in 1970. The Division was augmented in 2009 with creation of additional technicalposts i.e. Principal Scientific Officers, Senior Scientific Officers andSenior Scientific Assistants in the field of Explosives/Ballistics, Weapons,Uniform Accouterments, Life Sciences, Building & Design, Electronics,Traffic & Transport. The Modernization Division is headed by Director, anofficer rank of the Inspector General of Police.
The Modernization Division consists of Modernization Wing headed by DIG andTechnological Development Wing. The Technological Development Wing ishaving following sub wings: -
- Traffic and Transport Wing
- Uniform Accouterments Wing
- Weapon Wing
- Electronics Wing
- Building and Design Wing
- Life Sciences Wing
- Ballistics & Explosive Wing
EachWing is headed by a Principal Scientific Officer.
